About

The Centre for Documentary Architecture (CDA) based at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is an interdisciplinary project that explores buildings as documents and built environments as archives in which history is inscribed. CDA is composed of architects, filmmakers, artists, historians and theorists who undertake a number of collective and individual research projects in contested areas or historical periods where architecture could be used as a registrar of political relations and transformations. Our analysis is centred on architecture’s materiality and it is undertaken in relation to other  archives, plans, drawings, photography, literature, film and social media and is mobilized by digital research techniques. Our projects include, but are not limited to, publications, exhibitions, installations, films, new media projects and public programs.

Ines Weizman

Ines Weizman is Director of the Centre for Documentary Architecture. She teaches at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and is Co-Director of the Bauhaus-Institute for History and Theory of Architecture and Planning. Ines trained as an architect at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the École d’Architecture de Belleville in Paris, the Sorbonne, the University of Cambridge, and the Architectural Association School of Architecture, where she completed her PhD thesis in History and Theory. She taught at the Architectural Association, Goldsmiths College London, the Berlage Institute of Architecture in Rotterdam and CASS School of Art and Architecture, London Metropolitan University. In 2014, her edited book Architecture and the Paradox of Dissidencewas published by Routledge. The book Before and After: Documenting the Architecture of Disaster, written together with Eyal Weizman was published in the same year by Strelka Press. In 2015 she edited with Jorge Otero-Pailos the issue “Preservation and Copyright” for the journal Future Anteriorby University of Minnesota Press. Her articles have appeared in books, magazines and journals including AA Files, ADD BEYONDAD Magazine, JAEFuture AnteriorHarvard Design MagazinePerspectaVolume,The Routledge Companion to Photography and Visual Culture and The Sage Handbook of Architectural Theory.The installation “‘Repeat Yourself’: Loos, Law and the Culture of the Copy” was shown at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2012, and in 2013 as solo-shows in the Architecture Centre Vienna and the Buell Architecture Gallery at Columbia University, New York. Earlier research and exhibition projects include “Celltexts. Books and other works produced in prison” (together with Eyal Weizman), first exhibited in Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turino (2008, 2009, 2014, 2015). In 2016 she organized the XIII. International Bauhaus-Colloquium, titled “Dust and Data”. A publication of essays of this conference will be published by Spector Books in 2019.

Ortrun Bargholz

Ortrun Bargholz studied architecture in London, Paris, Vienna and Weimar, where she completed her masters degree in 2016 with a thesis on the reconstruction of modernity. She was project coordinator for the XIII International Bauhaus-Colloquium 2016 titled “Dust and Data” and research assistant at the Chair of Historic Monuments and Architectural History at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. She is currently working in an architectural office in Berlin.

Vera Heinemann

Vera Heinemann was trained as an architect at the Tashkent Architecture Building Institute and the Bauhaus-Universität in Weimar, graduating with a scientific work about a building of Soviet Postmodernism. From 2012 to 2013, she was part of the design team of Henning Stummel Architects Ltd. in London.At the XIII. International Bauhaus-Kolloquium, which took part in 2016 titled “Dust and Data”, she coordinated the Performance Dinner with the artists of “Cooking Sections”.

Wolfram Höhne

Wolfram Höhne studied Fine Art at Bauhaus-Universität (1995-2000) and produced collaborative public art projects (Kooperative Kunstpraxis, 2000-2007) among them exhibitions in Kunsthaus Dresden, Goethe-Institut Tel Aviv and Neues Museum Weimar. A summary of the theoretical understanding of this works is published in Das Vermögen der Kunst (Böhlau-Verlag, 2007). Since 2008 he produced documentary and science films. His filmwork is focused on the interrelations between scientific facts and their filmic narration. The films are published online and screened on TV (The aggression gene, MDR/2012; Elham, ZDF/2015). He was teaching at the Faculty of Philosophy (Universität Erfurt, 2001-2005), the Department of Film (Kunsthochschule Kassel, 2012) and the Faculty of Media (Bauhaus-Universität, 2006-2016). He participated in several academic projects such as the platform for science films “Studio Bauhaus”, the development of an online based curricula for teaching film. Since 2016, he works on his PhD thesis as part of the DFG post graduate programme “Identität und Erbe”.

Sonja Kettel

Sonja Kettel studied speech science and phonetics at the Martin-Luther-Universität in Halle-Wittenberg with a focus on media rhetoric. Since 2000 she has been working as a freelance editor in the post-production of documentary, nature and science films. Among others, she worked on behalf of the public television MDR, the Marco Polo Film AG and the Medienanstalt Sachsen-Anhalt. As a lecturer at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the Kunsthochschule Halle Burg Giebichenstein she held seminars about the vocal composition of audio-visual productions. Since 2018 she works as a research assistant at the Department of Speech Training/ Speech Science of the Universität Leipzig.

Markus Schlaffke

Markus Schlaffke is an artist and filmmaker. He teaches cinematography, editing and artistic strategies at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar at the Faculty of Media. Together with Wolfram Höhne he produced numerous documentaries and TV broadcastings. He participated in several art exhibitions in the field of media art. He received awards such as the Focus Award (2003) and the Unicato TV-Award (2009). His films include: Deep Ilmact (Mocumentary, 2008), The Aggression Gene (Documentary, 2012), Elham (Childrens Movie, 2014) and numerous contributions to the science video channel “Studio Bauhaus”.

Anna Luise Schubert

Anna Luise Schubert has studied architecture at the Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center and the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, where she is currently completing her master’s degree. She was part of the editorial team of ARCH+magazine and worked as long-term project assistant for Oda Pälmke, Berlin. At the XIII. International Bauhaus-Kolloquium 2016 titled “Dust and Data”, she was in charge of the public relations and coordinated the collateral exhibition.

Volkmar Umlauft 

Volkmar Umlauft is a writer and film director. He studied cultural studies and art history at the Humboldt Universität Berlin and film directing at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (dffb). Since 2006 he teaches film directing, acting and dramaturgy, amongst others at the dffb, the DEKRA Academy of Media Arts and the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. He has been working as a filmmaker since 1991 and participated with his films in several international festivals.

Amelie Wegner

Amelie Wegner has studied at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Montpellier and the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, where she is currently completing her master’s degree in architecture and working as a student assistant for Prof. Hilde Barz-Malfatti (Urban Architecture).  From 2015 to 2016 she was part of the design team of David Chipperfield Architects, Berlin.
